Right to receive information

Definition

A First Amendment principle, established in Lamont v. Postmaster General, protecting Americans' right to receive speech from others — including foreign sources — without government interference based on disagreement with the content.

Examples

  • Creator-petitioners invoked the right to receive information to argue Americans have a First Amendment interest in accessing TikTok even if ByteDance itself lacks First Amendment rights.
