Fugitive tolling
Definition
A doctrine under which the clock on a legal period (such as a sentence or supervision term) stops running when the person subject to it flees or hides from authorities. The time spent as a fugitive does not count toward completing the term, effectively extending it.
Examples
- •The government argued that Rico's 37-month supervised release term should be tolled during the period she absconded, so that crimes committed after the original term would have expired still count as supervised release violations.
