Age verification

Definition

A mechanism requiring users to confirm they are adults before accessing age-restricted content or services. Methods range from showing a government-issued ID to biometric scanning (such as a face scan) or using transactional data such as credit or mortgage records to infer age.

Examples

  • Texas H.B. 1181 allows three methods: a digital ID (unavailable in Texas), a government-issued ID, or commercially reasonable methods relying on transactional data—petitioners argue all are too burdensome, while Texas argues biometric scanning satisfies the law with no identifying information.
